Fruit Fly Farm Solo Cup

1. From your Lab station
Scupula (1)
Triple beam balance (1)
100 ml PLASTIC Graduated Cylinder (1)
100 ml GLASS Graduated Cylinder (1)
2. From Display Station
12-14 oz Solo cup (1) TP12
662P Solo cup lid (1)
One small cotton ball
Sharpie
One Beaker of Fruit Fly Media for every two lab stations
One small beaker of Yeast for every two lab stations
3. Mass your Solo Cup, lid, and cotton ball together on a Triple Beam Balance. Record this mass neatly on the cup in grams.
4. Get Scupula, 100 ml Plastic Graduated Cylinder and Fruit Fly Media. Put the following amount of Fruit Fly Media in your Solo Cup: (Do not get your 100 ml Plastic Graduated Cylinder wet!!!)
¥ 30 ml of fruit fly media if your lab station is an odd number
¥ 15 ml of fruit fly media if your lab station is an even number
5. Get a 100 ml Glass Graduated Cylinder and sprinkle the following amount of fresh water in your Solo Cup
¥ 28 ml of water if your lab station is an odd number
¥ 14 ml of water if your lab station is an even number
6. Obtain one of the yeast beakers. Take a very small pinch of Yeast between your thumb and forefinger. Sprinkle it on top of the Fruit Fly media in your Solo Cup.
7. Carefully snap the lid on top of the Solo Cup and place the Cotton Ball into the Solo Cup lid's straw hole. (about 1/2 way)
8. Mass the entire Fruit Fly Farm. Subtract the mass you measured in 3. above from the total mass to get the mass of the media inside the cup. Record this per number 9 below.
9. Get a Sharpie. Neatly mark the following data on your cup in the order show below.

Date:
Volume of Fruit Fly media (either 30 or 15 ml)
Mass of Fruit Fly Farm MEDIA (in grams to 0.01g)
Mass of Cup (in grams to 0.01g)
Also use the Sharpie to divide the solo cup into 4 quadrants for counting larva later. 10. Clean your equipment and lab station completely. Put all your equipment away properly.
11. Store Fruit Fly Farm in the container provided.
Work on your other assigned work.
