Male and Female Drosophila

Notice that the male (on the left) has a darker, rounded abdomen. Under a dissecting microscope the male's abdomen often looks shiny black. The female is larger, has distinctive black bands around its longer, more pointed abdomen. Females can often be seen laying eggs. They lay them either singly or in long strands.
