Dropping your Genes

Worksheet

Student#____

Greetings!!!! Today you will take a swim in the gene pool and make a baby!

Step One: Give Alleles to your Mating (Baby). Look at Data Table One and figure out which one of the alleles of the genes you have you want to give to your baby. Record this in the "Allele you gave to mating" column. Continue down this column until you are finished.

Step Two: Donate Alleles for other Matings (Babies): Now figure out which allele of each of your genes you want to give to a mate. Write that down on a small slip of paper, fold it once, and put it in the proper receptacle for that gene. Do this for all 24 traits!

Step Three: Get Alleles from your Mate!! Go around the room and reach blindly into each trait's receptacle and pull out an allele of each gene. Write each allele in the proper place on your Data Table.

Step Four: Record Baby's Genotype - Take the Allele you gave to your Mating (Baby) in Step One AND the Allele you Got from your Mate in Step Two and COMBINE them in the Baby's Genotype column. (Remember: Dominant alleles written first!)

Step Five: Figure out Baby's Phenotype - Look at your Baby's Genotype and figure out what the Baby's Phenotype will be for that trait.

Step Six: Draw your Baby (Front Cover) - Take all the data you have and draw a head and shoulders picture of your baby at any age for your Front Cover. You must label all the traits not shown in the head and shoulders figure underneath the figure itself... ie hitch hiker's thumb, tongue rolling, etc.
