4. 6. (Solutions-->Sewage) Everyday, 1,692 million gallons of treated sewage, called effluent, goes into Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Determine how much of this treated sewage comes from the United States. How much comes from Canada? (5 pts)

 

7. (Solutions-->Sewage) My family tried to go clamming recently but found out that harvesting of shellfish was restricted at the beach we went to. My wife called the Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning hotline, but the beach was not closed because of red tide. Tell another major reason that the beach was probably closed. (10 pts)

 

8. (Solutions-->Oil Spill) Not counting major oil spills, over two million gallons of oil enters Puget Sound every year! Describe the three main sources this oil comes from. (5 pts)

 

9. (Solutions-->Oil Spill) The Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska released 11 million gallons of oil. Puget Sound receives 2 million gallons of oil per year. Use the oil spill quantities above to determine how many years would it take for Puget Sound to receive the same amount of oil as the Exxon Valdez disaster? (5 pts)

12. (Solutions) In the last five days you have explored and learned an enormous amount about Puget Sound. In a six sentence paragraph, answer the following questions: (15 pts)

a. Do you think that you care about Puget Sound more now than you did before? (5 pts)

b. Describe one environmental problem that you have encountered in your household. (5 pts)

c. Explain what you are going to do to help solve the problem. (5 pts)
