Environment Core Part One Per____Ecology and Ecosystems Vocab & Research Student #____Vocabulary Building Instructions. &endash; For each research chapter.
Take the Science Words listed in each section and make up a complete, quality, and correct defining sentence. A defining sentence uses the word being defined within it. (Definitions from the glossary will not receive full credit.)
Example: Abiotic
Defining sentence: All of the nonliving factors in our environment are considered as abiotic factors. Abiotic examples are sunlight, precipitation, and latitude.
Research question Instructions Complete the following Data Tables, Figures, Exercises and Questions on a separate sheet of paper. Quality answers embody the question in the answer in a complete, informative sentence(s). Quality answers will receive the most credit. Use lined paper and ink or word processor.
Chapter/Section 18.1 The living and non living Environment (125 points for this job)
a. Complete Vocabulary building using the Science Words page 482. (3pts. Each =20 pts.)
b. Questions: Answer questions 1- 8 (105 total points!)
1. Use the information in your text to complete the following data table on Abiotic factors and their effect on living things.

3. List the three component parts of soil and explain which part makes some soils more fertile than others. (5pts, 3pt ea.)
4. Explain why sunlight is such a significant factor in the biosphere. Give at least one example. (5pts)
5. What four specific factors do all organisms depend on other organisms to get for them? (5pt, 1ea)
6.List the 7 levels of your internal biological organization from the smallest to largest level. (10pt, 1ea)
7. You are the organism in the center of the 7 nested ovals, one inside another.
Use your massive understanding of the levels of Biological Organization to label each level in the proper ring outward from your level. (10pts, 3pt ea)
8. What's the difference between: (15pt, 5pt each)
a. A population and a community?b. A community and an ecosystem?
c. An ecosystem and the Biosphere?
Chapter/Section 19.1 How Ecosystems Change (65 points for this job)
a. Complete Vocabulary building using the Science Words page 510. (3pts. Each =15 pts.)b. Questions: Answer question 9 (50 total points!)
9. Use Figure 19.1 AND the text to help you complete the following data table. (Note Stage A in the Figure is of Primary Succession, B AND C are of Secondary, D is of a Climax Community.)

a. Complete Vocabulary building using the Science Words page 516. (3pts. Each =30 pts.)b. Questions: Answer questions 10-20 (70 total points!)
10. List four major abiotic factors that can affect climate. (5pts)
The Effect of Altitude and Elevation on Temperature - Most scientists consider the effects of latitude on climate to be similar to that of the effects of elevation. However, this effect is caused by entirely different conditions.
11. What condition causes a change in latitude to create a change in Earth's temperature? (remember lectures and see Figure 19-5) (5pts)
12. What condition causes a change in altitude to create a change in Earth's temperature? (5pts).
13. Water is one of the most important factors of affecting climate. Name the five most common forms of precipatation? (5pts)
14. World wide winds and climate
a. Draw a complete Six (convection) Cell diagram showing the wind cells and their directions on Earth, the latitudes, and direction of Earth's rotation. (5pts)b. The latitudes where the air moves downward creates High pressure on surface of the Earth. Label these areas on your diagram as High. (5pts)
c. The latitudes where the warmed air moves upwards pulls air molecules away from the surface of the Earth, creating low pressure in these latitudes. Label these areas on your diagram as Low. (5pts)
d. Now read the section on Precipitation on p 518 and explain why the areas at 30ûN/S and at the Poles have very little precipation. (5pts)
The Land Biomes section in your book has the answers to the following questions.
15. Adaptations and species. Tell how plants are adapted to the Tundra climate and name four species of tundra plants. (5pts)
16. Taiga plants. Look at Figure 19-10, go outside and examine a confier, then explain three ways conifers, ( spruce, fir, pines, hemlocks, and cedar) are adapted to the snowy taiga climate. (5pts)
17. What are the two layers of vegetation in a Temperate Deciduous Forest, and why are they important to the survival of creatures on the forest floor? (5pts)
18. Tropical Rain forest. Describe two different adaptations that tropical rain forest plants have so they can survive in this environment. (5pts)
19. Grasslands and Temperate Deciduous Forests are very similar land biomes. In fact, a Grassland will become a Deciduous Forest if only one major abiotic factor were to change. What abiotic factor is this? (5pts)
20. Describe one behaviorial adaptation many desert animals use to survive in the dry, hot desert biome. (5pts).
Most animals are only active during the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are less extreme.
Chapter/Section 19.3 Protecting Antarctica (20 points for this job)
a. Questions: Answer question 21 (20 total points!)21. Presently, all of Antarctica is protected from mining operations. However America constantly needs more minerals and oil to keep up our lifestyle at the level it is today. Tell us your opinion. 15pts
a. Should we mine in Antarctica? (5 pts)
b. List two positives and two negatives to doing this. (10 pts)
Chapter/Section 19.4 Water Environments (75 points for this job)
