Washington State EALRs

for the Hopping the Net Project

Schmied/Hartford©2010

We designed the Hopping the Net project around these Washington State Science EALRs:

1.6

Construct and use models to predict, test, and understand scientific phenomena

2.1

Plan and implement scientific investigations

2.2

Think logically and creatively

2.3

Practice the principles of scientific inquiry

4.3

Use effective communication strategies and tools to prepare and present science information.

5.1

Use mathematics to enhance scientific understanding.

The Technology EALRS used in this project are explained below. The numbers represent the actual tech EALR.

1. The Student as an Information Navigator is addressed by when they are off exploring the World Wide Web's frog links to carry out research whilst communicating findings on-line with other classrooms.

2. The student as critical thinker and analyzer using technology is accomplished by maintaining and manipulating a database that records environmental parameters as well as the growth of the frogs. (See enclosed sample) Students use the spreadsheet to graph and analyze the results. They can contrast their data with that of the buddy classroom to determine the optimal environment for raising frogs. Or, as often happens in natural systems, explore why growth didn't successfully occur, and what could be changed next cycle to solve these problems.

3.The student as creator of knowledge using technology, media and telecommunications is developed through a HyperStudio project where students choose one aspect of the project to describe and share with others who can use the embedded links to explore screened research sites.

4. The student as effective communicator through a variety of appropriate technologies/media is practiced through their mentoring link, the HyperStudio stack/presentation, and the use of interactive web sites such as 1000 Friends of Frogs and Frog land.

7. The student as a responsible citizen, worker, learner, community member and family member in a technological age is addressed by the content of theme itself. Caring for animals and studying their plight in the modern world trains students to be more responsible citizens. Using the web to enhance the investigation and to share findings gives students a global perspective of the issue. Training on proper on-line etiquette addresses issues of honesty and integrity. However, more importantly, the project enhances personal leadership while exercising mentor - learning buddy relationships.
